Cleanright – safe and sustainable use of detergents

The detergent industry has launched a major information initiative to advise consumers on the safe and sustainable use of detergents.

It consists of a multilingual website with a wide range of useful information on detergents, cleaners and maintenance products for use in the home; information about what types of products to use for different tasks (such as cleaning surfaces, furniture and fabrics); how to obtain the best results from your products; information on ingredients; how to use products safely; and what to do in the event of an accident or misuse.

It also includes Safe Use icons, a sets of icons developed by the industry to provide advice to consumers, in a simple and direct manner, on how to use detergents safely. These icons are displayed on product packaging throughout Europe.

Today’s cleaning and maintenance products make our daily household tasks a lot easier, as do labour-saving electrical appliances such as dishwashers and washing machines. But to avoid wasting resources or harming the environment, consumers must use their products and appliances responsibly. Research has revealed that between 50% -80% of overall carbon emissions related to cleaning products can occur during the use phase (e.g. when used in dishwashers or washing machines). For this reason, the website also gives tips on saving water, energy, CO2 and money using a set of easy-to-understand icons for laundry detergents, dishwashing detergents, all-purpose cleaners and trigger spray cleaners.
