The plastics-converting industry, with its 34,000 employees, is an important economic sector in Flanders. PlastIQ, the training organisation set up by the sector’s social partners, was created to meet companies’ needs in training, educating and employing job seekers. PlastIQ also undertakes various initiatives with schools to familiarise young people with this fascinating industry.
The services provided by PlastIQ have been well-received: since 2014, 700 employees have followed a training course; 93 job seekers have been trained as plastics operators , of which 75% found employments afterwards; 1,459 students followed a one-day training course in one of the four Flemish ‘centre schools for plastic technologies’; and 7,477 primary school pupils took part in a workshop in the plastics lab.
PlastIQ intends to continue in this direction in future, with a focus on professionalising the service for companies and employees. The training it provides responds to the needs of the industry and the changing profiles of those it collaborates with.
